AIE Writing Task 3

Expository Writing Focus: Compare and contrast

Prompt: Write a well-constructed paragraph that compares and contrasts for the reader one of the two videos we watched yesterday. Although each dance is a different style, what similarities exist? What differences are apparent? Consider the dance vocabulary we have been using: time, space, negative space, levels, unison, non-unison, pathways, etc.

Planning: Create a Venn diagram in which to take notes as you view the videos. Watch each video at least once more.

Key Components of a Good Response:
  • There is a topic sentence that restates the prompt.
  • There is an awareness of audience (teacher, classmates, and community) and use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • The paragraph is 6-8 sentences long, at least.
  • The paragraph allows the reader to understand the similarities and differences between the videos.
  • The paragraph uses interesting words that "bump up" their vocabulary and engage the reader. These words are IN ALL CAPS. You should include at least 2 "bumped-up" words.

  1. The dances "Weightless" and "Finger Food" are very similar, but they also have a lot of differences. On the one hand, "Finger Food" and "Weightless" both EXHIBIT people moving with a lot of control over their bodies. They both move FLUIDLY but also they have total control of the movements. Neither of the dances travel much. "Weightless" is different from "Finger Food" because it is a lot qieter and more peaceful. It also seems sad. "Finger Food" more AGRESSIVE. They both try to tell a story with the mood of their movements.

    1. I agree with Emily when she says that both routines show the dancers having very good control over their bodies. It amazes me how skilled each one is. Along with her, I do not feel that either displayed many pathways. I don't feel that "Weightless" was exactly sad; maybe more expressive than anything. I definitely agree that the dancers are trying to exhibit stories.

    2. I agree with Emily because they are similar but they do have differences because in "Weightless" the girl was doing the dance moves slowly and in "Finger food" the guy was doing his dance moves a little bit faster than the girl. Like in "Weightless" it does seem sad it mkaes it seem like something was going on in her life at the moment and especially with the sad music.

  2. King Bones & DJ Aaron "Finger Food" New York City Subway | YAK FILMS Flexing Bonebreaking Gas AND Hurrikane & Android in "Clutter" YAK FILMS | Ronald Jenkees Music | Brooklyn Subway New York are similar but yet still diffrent. They are similar by both dances working lot with their hands. Also they work alot with their bodies. Some of the diffrences are that King Bones & DJ Aaron are double jointed so it is easy for them to move with their arms. And Hurrikane & Android move more with their hands, but it seemed they were kinda tense. They to me, didnt let the music speek to them. But i still think both dances were truly amazing.

  3. The first dance I watched was set in a subway station. At first there was SOLITARY dancer who traveled from the platform to the subway. Then he was joined by another one who was dressed just like him. Then they danced in unison, heaving their arms up and down.In this dance there were no visible musicians. In the second dance, there was a small band of musicians playing Spanish music while a female dancer PIROUETTED around. Throughout the whole dance she only traveled about a few feet. The two dances both had atmosphere because the music and the settings made you feel like you were there. The dancers in both dances were dressed up as well, in the first one they wore gas masks, in the second one the dancer wore a long red dress.

  4. Two of the dances that I viewed were "Fingerfood" and "Radio and Juliet". While both of the dances were slightly similar at times, they definitely VARIED in style. While "Fingerfood"'s music and style was very urban and ECCENTRIC, the dance "Radio and Juliet" was performed in a more classical style, although the music was still more CURRENT. The costumes were also different. "Fingerfood" used street clothes, besides the gas masks. "Radio and Juliet" used more classical dance apparel, besides the masks. I noticed that the first performance did not use many pathways, and often used unison movements, while in the second, many entrances and exits were used, along with many movements not in unison. The two routines were similar in a LIMITED number of ways, such as them both using more of a modern feel. Both also used strange accessories/props, such as the masks. All in all, I enjoyed both equaly, although they did strongly CONTRAST in style.

    1. I agree with Jade that 'Radio and Juliet' was more of a classical style of dance. The dancers moved in ways that weren't uncommon and they did use pathways to link one part of the dance to the next. The two dances definitley had different costumes, but they both seemed to be appropriate to the mood of the dance. I also enjoyed both dances and I agree that they had more differences than similarites.

    2. I like how Jade brought attention to the difference in time periods, and how the clothes are very different. I agree that they were both good, but were very different. The style and movements in Radio and Juliet were very classical, while Finger Food was original.

    3. I also agree with Jade because i did think that "Radio and Juliette" and "Fingerfood" were a little simelar but their styles were VERY different. I also agree that the costumes were very different but those two dances were the same because they were really good.

  5. The dances "weightless" and "Finger Food" are similar but not just similar there are differences too. Finger food is similar to "weightless" because they are both moving at a slow past."Finger food" is different to "Weightless" because it's outside in a subway and "Weightless" is in a bedroom. Also Finger food" has more dance moves then "Weightless" because the guy is moving around more than the girl in "Weightless". In "Finger food" the guy is wearing a gas mask and the girl is not. In "Weightless" the girl is in her bedroom doing these dance moves and the guy is outside. In both of the videos they are both dancing in non-unison because they are both doing different dance moves than just doing one move.

  6. The first dance i watched was finger food. Their dance moves were very COMPLICATED and ENERGETIC. The video overall was very energetic and mysterious and very modern wiht the way they dress and their dance stylings. The second video I watched was the Weightless video. The womans dance moves were very calm and very planned out. She took her time in the way she moved. The second dance the dancer was dressed very TRADITIONALY and by the way she danced was very traditional and very ACKWARD the music was very calming. Both videos were kind of modern and ackward to me it seemed both were trying to tell a story through their movements.

  7. The first dance i watched was "Finger Food". The second video that i watched was called "Weightless". These two videos have similarities and differences. Both of these videos are similar because they are doing very abstract moves. In both videos the dancers act like they are relaxed and make it seem easy. Also in both videos the dancers seem scared. In the video "Finger Food", they guy was doing a lot of movement with his arms. But in "Weightless" she floats throughout the room. Also in "Weightless" the video seems sad and depressing. In "Finger Food" the video is more upbeat.

  8. The videos "wieghtless" and "finger food" are similar but they also have alot of differencs. "Weieghtless" is alot different from finger foods because weightless is more peacful and is kind of TRANQUILIZING. Another difference is in weighless the girl floats throughout the room and in finger foods the THESPIAN stays in one place most of the time. Weightless is like a very sad and depressed but finger foods kinda looks like the performer is very happy and excited for something. In weigtless there is only one peroson that performs in finger foods there are two people that perform. Some similaarities are they both have alot of movement throughtout the video. Also they both try to tell a story by using there body and movements. Both of the videos have a performer moving at all times. Thats some of the differences and similarities.

  9. The dances Weightless and Radio and Juliet have many similarities. One example is that they both are very FASCINATING to watch. I've never seen anything like weightless... I thought it was very DYNAMIC. Radio and Juliet was also very DYNAMIC and INTENSE. I saw the way they were moving and I couldn’t help thinking about the pathways they were taking. There were a lot of similarities to Weightless and Radio and Juliet. There were also many differences between the dances. For example, in Radio and Juliet, there were about seven people and in Weightless, there was only one girl. In Weightless, there couldn’t be any UNISON movements because there was only one person. In Radio and Juliet there were many UNISON movements and NON-UNISON movements, some happened at the same time... I believe there were more differences than similarities though.

  10. In the videos 'Flexing Bonebreaking Gas Masks' and 'Weightless' there are similarities and differences in the way they dance and how they use the space around them. Both of the dances are similar because they have two dancers that perform UNREAL movements. They also both use time in thier dances to make their movements flow together. The dances are different because the gas mask dance has lots of fast, JAGGED movements, while the weightless dance has soft, LEISURELY movements. In addition the gas mask dance uses unison and pathways, when the two men danced together, and one walked down the isle of a subway car. The weightless dance, uses levels to make it seem as if the dancer is defying gravity, and she also uses the negative space in the room.

    1. i agree with katarina because the movements in both flexing bonebreaking gas masks and weightless were very unreal.I also agree that the movements in bonebreaking gas masks are very jagged.

  11. The dances “Finger Food” and “Eva Yerbabuena” are both kind of similar but also very different. The dance “Finger Food” had lots of ISOLATED movements and they mostly moved their arms. In the dance “Eva Yerbabuena” she mostly moved her legs and was moving RAPIDLY all around. They are two completely different types of dance but they are still similar. They are similar because the dancers both show emotion through their dancing by the facial expression.Even know you can not see the dancers in “Finger Food’s” faces you can still tell by looking at their eyes. You can also tell that they are both PASSIONATE about what they are doing.

    1. I agree with Jessica. It seemed that "Fingerfood" didn't do a lot with their bodies. They made most of their movement with their arms.

The first dance i watched was finger food.At first there was one guy but he made a PATHWAY to the subway platform where he was joined by another guy.Sometimes they were dancing in UNISON and other times there were in NON-UNISON.The other video i watched was weightless. At first the girl is very eerie and slow.In these two videos there are a lot similarities they are, both if the dancers do a lot of hand movements and a lot of movements that gave an illusion of how they were moving. Some differences in the dances were the girl from weightless did not move in unison with anyone but the guys from finger food were in unison at some parts.

    1. I agree with Jamie, the girls in Weightless did not move in unison at all in the video. But, at some parts in Finger Foods the two guys moved in unison.

  13. The creative dances 'Weightless' and 'Ballet: Radio and Juliet' are similar in many ways. In my opinion they both carry a story. The dances both include time and levels. However similiar these dances may be, they also contain differences. One difference is the mood and tempo; when 'Ballet: Radio and Juliet' is fast paced and THRILLING, 'Weightless' is FLOWING, SLOW, and without gravity. The two themes conveyed by these videos are also very different; in 'Weightless' the theme was you can do anything, you're weightless! In 'Ballet: Radio and Juliet I felt there was a TOXIC love story behind the dance, perhaps suggesting a girl's love for her music. 'Ballet: Radio and Juliet' and 'Weightless' are similar videos, but they also have many differences too.

  14. I disagree with Cailey, I don't think the video 'Weightless' was depressing or sad as it was just a lot of slow movements. Also there are two people that preform in Weightless, just not at the same time. I also didn't think the preformers in 'Finger Food' was very happy but rather content.

  15. The two videos I chose to compare and contrast are "Ballet: Radio and Juliet" and "Finger Food." The video of "Finger Food" was in a very REMOTE area and mostly moved their arms in unison movements. Where the video of "Ballet: Radio and Juliet" was in a SPACIOUS area where the dancers had a lot of room to dance. These to videos are a lot different from one another but they do also have some similarities. These to videos are similar because all the dancers get into the dance and show a lot of emotion towards their dancing. In both "Finger Food" and "Ballet: Radio and Juliet" the dancers are dancing in UNISON most of the time.

  16. The two videos I viewed were "Fingerfood" and "Radio and Juliet." The two dances had very different style. “Fingerfood” was very slow and ROBOTIC. “Radio and Juliet,” had a lot of EXPEDITIOUS and smooth movement. I felt that “Fingerfood” was more non-unison. They also seemed to do most of their dancing in their arms. “Radio and Juliet” included a lot of unison movement. The presenters in “Radio and Juliet” also tended to use their entire body while dancing. I also noticed how both their settings seemed to fit well with their movement. The dancers also seemed to express a lot of emotion throughout their performance.

  17. I agree with Katarina because I also noticed how bizarre the movements of the men in the subway dance were and how rigidly they moved.

  18. There were many differnces and similarities between RAdio and Juliet and Eva Yerbabuena. Some similarities were that the music was FAST and UPBEAT. Also they were ENERGETIC and used their SPACE wisely. I also felt that they expressed EMOTION when they were dancing. Some differences between the 2 dances were that all of the dance in Radio and Juliet were in UNISON, but Eva Yerbabuena's dance was one person. Even though both the dances showed EMOTION I felt that Eva Yerbabuena's dance showed more of it.

  20. the first video i watched was fingerfood that one was very energetic and they were constantly making you cringe unlike weightless whch in my opinion didnt take much skill just a good carpenter and a good camera angle but they both didnt move a whole lot in either one.

  21. There were a few similarities between Radio and Juliet and Wieghtless by Erika Janunger. They both were ballish becuase ballet is very flexible. Radio and Juliet's music was Fast. Wieghtless was sad and slow. They both expresed emotion Radio and Juliet more than Wieghtless but they both still expressed emotion. Radio and Juliet was in Unison but Wieghtless was done with two people that wasn't in unison. I liked both but i liked Radio and Juliet more.

  22. My two favorite videos were Fingerfood and the Radio and Juliet ballet. The fingerfood video was so energetic and full of intricate movment. The ballet was also full of INTRICATE movments but it seemed so DELICATE and DIFFERENT from Fingerfood. Fingerfood was very ROBOTIC and very GHETTO. Radio and Juliet was exotic compared to Fingerfood. Radio and Juliet was more swift.

  23. The two dances "Fingerfood" and "Radio and Juliet" were really different but some things were the same. "fingerfood" was very robotic and hip-hop. But "Radio and Juliet" was very classy and the type of dance was ballet. Also in "Fingerfood" the setting was at a subway station which kind of went with the dance. While "Radio and Juliet's" setting was very boring and plain. Also the dancers in "Radio and Juliet" used there whole bodies to make shapes in there dancer, while the dancers in "Fingerfood" mostly used there arms and hands.

  25. The two dances we watched "finger food and "radio and juliet" were very intresting. There were many contrasts beetween the two dances. For example finger food had a very urban setting. Radio and juliet had a blank stage. Fingerfood was more of a type of hip_hop and radio and juliet was a type of balletSome comparisons were the music. The music was both very modern. They also had a lot of space.

  27. I watched the videos "Finger Food" and "Weightless" and then compared and contrasted them. Between "Finger Food" and "Weightless" there was not many RELATIONS. One of the differences between "Finger Food" and "Weightless" was "Finger Food" was very VIGOROUS and "Weightless" was very smooth and calm. Another contrast is "Finger Food" there is two people and "Weightless" there is one. I like "Finger Food" better because it was more interesting.

  31. Arts in Ed. Blog Post 3-

Today in arts in ed we watched two videos, One-”The Cold Song” and Two- “R.I.P. Sodapop”. In my personal PREFERENCE R.I.P. Sodapop was the better of the two videos because of the dance style. To compare and contrast the videos could be RELATIVELY easy however finding similarities may prove difficult, so i will start with the hard. The two videos that we watched were very different but some of the similarities i found were the fact that both dances were had an EMOTIONAL message to spread. Also i realized that both videos involved death and/or a MELANCHOLY theme. For differences i noticed that simply the whole way the dancers moved and acted were very ADVERSE to one another.

  32. In finger food and weightless, there was some similarities. Finger Food had very little pathways, as well as weightless. All of the dancers seemed to contort their bodys to some extent, and they all had very little negative space. While Finger Food did not seem very emotional, Weightless did have emotion behind it. Even though what emotion is slightly unclear
