Prompt: Write a well-constructed paragraph that describes the experience of watching the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company perform. Incorporate references to the dance concepts we have been discussing with Meg, such as: time, space, negative space, levels, unison, non-unison, pathways, etc. You may speak about the performance in general or comment on a small part of it. Your writing should allow the reader to visualize the event.
Planning: Create a list of three adjectives that describe the experience. Try to use the resources to "bump-up" your vocab. Brainstorm what you remember from the performance: costumes, music, movements, energy, etc.
Key Components of a Good Response:
- There is a topic sentence that restates the prompt.
- There is an awareness of audience (teacher, classmates, and community) and use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- The paragraph is 6-8 sentences long, at least.
- The paragraph allows the reader to visualize the performance
- The paragraph uses interesting words that "bump up" their vocabulary and engage the reader. These words are IN ALL CAPS. You should include at least 2 "bumped-up" words.
- You received a "mini-thesaurus" with many different descriptive words. Reference that to find words to use to enhance your vocabulary.
- This is an online reference of descriptive words from Allan Hancock College.

- You must respond to a classmate's post by Monday, March 5 at 9 P.M.
A few day ago we watch Ellen Sinopoli. Its was a good performence i think. The costumes that they chose to go with the songs was wierd. The one dance that I thought was good was the "Rising Low" because it was funny. All the other songs were ok. But all of like the Rising Low.
ReplyDeleteTuesday, we watched the Eleen Sinopoli Dance Company. I honestly found it as effective as ABYSMAL. I am no where near intrested in dance. But to be UNBIAS about things, I found it simmilar to every other dance company. I feel bad that they put so much work into this dance. But I DISPISE Dancing alot.
ReplyDeleteThe Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company was very exciting to watch. My favorite dance was “Oh My” because I liked how the dancers traveled occasionally in non-unison, but then would end up doing the same thing. A lot of people really liked “Rise and Low,” but I didn’t really like how the movements were very rough and AGGRESSIVE in the second part. I liked the first part where the one girl was all alone, but I was wondering why they just kept all the other girls sitting in the chairs. They only ever moved once, and never used any pathways. I think my favorite part of the whole performance was how it seemed like the music moved with the dancers and how they INTERTWINED. I’m really glad that they took the time to come preform for us so we could learn in a new way.
ReplyDeleteEllen Sinopoli Dance Company was EXCITING and INTRESTING. The dancers traveled in pathways and they were very focused. They did 3 dance
ReplyDeleteroutines called, Coming and Going; Rising Low; and Oh My; My favorite routine was "Oh My". I liked this peice the most because it was telling a story. But anyway i really enjoyed having the dance company here.
I really agree with you when you talk about the dancers telling a story. I liked how Ellen Sinopoli explained how she had chosen the dances, along with the music.
DeleteI agree with Carlie because I thought that it was Exciting and intresting too. I liked how they were very focused on their dance routines. I liked the Rising Low because it kinda felt like they were in a classroom and that one girl that was not sitting in the chairs I thought she was teaching the girls that were in the chairs.
DeleteI honestly agree with you about the dancer's telling a story. Although sometimes the story didn't actually come out during the performance, the dancers definetly tried to get it across. I also agree that it was interesting beacuse of the movements.
Deletei agree oh my was my favorite
DeleteWhen the Ellen Sinopli Dance Company came they performed multiple dances for us. One dance that they did was called 'Rising Low'. In this dance there were 5 girls that were wearing plain dresses. The dance was centered around a group of 4 chairs that they used as props. The dance was slow and emotional, and the dancers made big, EXAGGERATED movements. At first the dancers didn't use negative space because all but one sat SOLEMNLY in the chairs. As the dance progressed though, the dancers spread out and used the whole stage. I liked the dance 'Rising low' becuase it was STIMULATING in the way the dancers' movements flowed together.
ReplyDeleteAs I watched the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Copany dance, I was amazed at how ENERGETIC the dancers seemed. In the first dance, Coming and Going, certain dancers danced in unison while another pair danced in non-unison. In this dance they wore decorated sports clothes. The next dance was more DRAMATIC,at first there was a single dancer SPRINTING across the stage while others sat on chairs in a corner. Then the other dancers PIROUETTED back and forth across the stage while the first dancer sat on a chair. This was the only dance in which the male dancer did not appear. The next dancer seemed ABSTRACT because of how the dancers moved. Some of the dancers wore yellow while others wore orange.
ReplyDeleteWhen I had first heard that the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company was going to perform for us, I have to admit that I wasn't completely ASTOUNDED. After the performance began, however, my feelings did change. The first dance performed was "Coming and Going". All of the dancers performed this routine, and out of the three, this was definitely the dance that demonstrated the most pathways. I found it INTRIGUING that the music used was only percussion, but surprisingly, it CORRESPONDED with the movements very well. The next performance, "Rising Low", definitely displayed a quick change of pace. While the first dance was fast and energetic, this one was more emotional. I enjoyed that the dancers really did seem to be telling a story. They moved incredible graceful, especially in the one solo in the beginning. The music for this piece consisted of SENTIMENTAL country song, followed by a blues one. Shockingly, the two pieces flowed together, and the music really did complement the dance. This piece was my favorite, because I could really feel the emotion behind it. The last piece, "Oh My", was also enjoyable, and I appreciated when Ellen Sinopoli explained her intentions and gave us some background knowledge on the piece. When the performance ended, I did enjoy the assembly more than I thought I would have, and felt like I had really learned something about the types of dance.
ReplyDeleteI agree with jade because I wasn’t very excited to see the dancers but after they began my opinion on modern dance definitely changed. I also agree that intriguing that most of the music they used was percussion.
DeleteI agree, when I heard that it would be modern dance I wasn't too excited. As I watched, though, I became fascinated by how the dancers kept to the rhythm of the music.
Deletetwo days ago ellen sinopoli dance compant came to perform modern dance for us.the first thing i relised about these dances is that they have lots of SPASTIC movements. the guy had a creepy smile alot and it scared me. modern dance is WIERD and makes no sence to me. i didnt think coming and going made any sence cuz all they did was walk around like five year olds. i understand the put lots of time and effort in to this but its not my style.
ReplyDeleteedited version: two days ago ellen sinopoli came to new lebanon. the have alot of interesting movements they perform. the have flowing movements like balay. going and going was random because it had no story.
DeleteOn Wedenesday, we watched Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company.I thought it was very intresting. They were very focused on their dances and weren't laughing or anything during them they knew what to do. They did 3 dances called "Rising Low", "Oh My" and Coming and Going. I liked they "Rising Low" because it was a very sad song to go with the dance so it made it more intresting. There was 5 girls and 4 of them were sitting in chairs that they used for props and there was one girl that was doing her dance moves and I thought that it was like she was a teacher and teaching the girls in the chairs. They all wore plain dresses but different colors. At first when they started their first dance called Coming and Going they didn't use the whole stage but throughout all the dances they began to spread out and use the whole stage. Then when all the dances were complete one of the girls came around and told Ellen Sinopoli the questions that people asked. I thought they were younger than 20-25 years old i thought they were like my age or a little bit older. There was one guy and he was in all of the dances except for "Rise and Low". I really liked and enjoyed having the dance company coming here.
ReplyDeletethe rise and low dance from ellen snopily dance commpany i thought was good and the music was superb.the women were good and the chairs ithought were great in the performance and thats alli got to say.
ReplyDeletethis is my redo
Deleteone of the dances was rise and low. and first started with five girls then it changed two one girl and the other four were sitting in chairs in plain dress. they played verry sad music.during the music olny one person was dancing and they played a sad coutry music song. she was expressing sadness in the way she moved and alot of space. she used the same pathway. and one of the other songs they used as a blues song and they used a blues volcalist. thats my discription
My favoite dance was the first one beacause every dancer was in it. andre was my favorite beacause he was happy the hole dance and was the only male dancer. I did not like the second dance beacause it was all girls. i also did not like that most of the girls did not dance. the last one was my other favorite. it was beacause it wasi felt the shortest.
DeleteWhen the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company came I really didn't know what to expect. When they came the six dancers preformed three ENTRIGUING dances for us. The one that made the biggest impression on me was entitled "OH MY!". During this dance all of the preformers were in BRIGHT orange outfits with metalic orange pants that looked like they GLOWED red and yellow like a sunset. They danced in rounds where one person would do the moves and after a certian number of seconds the next person would do the same moves, they would have three or four people do that. The dancers GRACEFULLY moved around our stage SUPPRISING me with everything they did. I have to admit I really hate dancing but this made me like watching dance. It was a pleasurable experience.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jessica that the third dance "OH MY!" that was performed by the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company was entriguing. I liked their costumes, because they reminded me of a bowl of colorful fruits. I also liked how their movements were engergetic yet elegant. In addition they kept my attetion by using time in the piece. As Jessica said, one person would do a series of moves, and then another person would do the same thing a few seconds later. Although this wasn't my favorite dance out of the three, I did enjoy watching it.
DeleteI like your description of the costume, Jess. I also agree that the dance really enthralled you, even if you weren't a fan of dance. The grace was surprising considering how exaggerated the movements were. The dance was very inspirational and creative.
DeleteOn wednesday February 29th we had some special performers come perform for us: The Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company came. They performed 3 dances for us titled Coming and Going, Rising Low and Oh My. Each dance was diffent type of dance and had a different style. My personal favorite dance was Coming and Going. The dance was set around the diffrent pathways the dancers to travel across the stage in groups and by themselves. The costumes were very UNIQUE as each dancers costume was diffrent in the colors they were wearing but other then that the costumes had diffrent patterns but mostly stripes. The PERFORMERS each took a pathway across the stage. Not many of their moves were in unison and each dance had their own OPPORTUNITY to perform a single dance on their own. The dance was mostly centerd around th ewomen in the dance company but every now and then Andre came out and danced. This dance was my personal favorite.
ReplyDeleteI thought the Ellen SInopli Dance Company did weird moves that i've never seen before. They did three dances, "Oh My", "Rising Low", and "Coming and Going". My favorite dance that they prformed was the first one that they did, called "Coming and Going". I liked this dance because it had the best music and dance moves to it. In my opinion i thought all of they other dances wern't as interesting. I also think that the dances were maybe just a little to long. I liked the constumes that they had to wear. I thought that their costumes were very EXCITING. I think the dancers showed a lot of EMOTION in their dancing. The first dance that they did, i thought that the music that went with it was very ENERGETIC. Even though i didn't like all of the dances that they preformed for us, im happy that they came to our school. I enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteThe Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company was very boring in my opinion. I didnt really like any of the dances because im not a dance person. Alot of my grade and the 7th grade liked "Oh My" and "Rising Low". THe other dance that no one really liked was "Coming and Going". If i had to choose between them i would of chose "Rising Run" because I liked the MOBILITY. they did. They had alot of different movements that i didnt understand but i still liked it. The part i liked the most was when the girl had a solo in the begining of the dance. The wierd part was why did the other girls sit in chairs for a while. Also what freaked me out was the costumes they were wearing they were very SINISTER. i felt a little uncomfortable watching them perform. They scaerd me when they started to run around the stage. I didnt really like this performance but thats my opinion.
ReplyDeleteWednesday February 29th the Ellen sinopoli dance company came to preform for the seventh and eighth grade. They preformed three dances rising low, coming and going, and oh my.My favorite dance was rising low the dancers all wore the same dress but in different colors, they were very plain. In this dance there was five girls,Four of the girls were sitting in chairs in the left corner of the stage looking very sad.One girl was dancing slowly and every few minuets she would do a move quickly.the dance had a lot of PATHWAYS and slow movements that were very CAPTIVATING.
ReplyDeleteI agree with jamie that the dance rise and low had alot of pathways and slow movemenets
DeleteWhen the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company came to our school, I'll admit, I wasn't very ACQUISITIVE. I've never been interested in dancing. However, when the dancers performed, they were very RHYTHMIC and balanced. Out of the three dances they performed for us, 'Rising Low,' 'Coming and Going,' and 'Oh My,' I think that 'Rising Low' was my favorite. It had a lot of emotion and it was relative to many peoples' lives today. I was very impressed by their hard work and talent. I'm very happy that they were able to come and give us a small introduction to something as big as Modern Dance.
ReplyDeleteI agree, they were RHYTHMIC, I liked how most of them would smile while doing the dances. It seemed like they really enjoyed what they were doing.
DeleteI agree with Emily that 'Rising Low' could relate to many peoples lives today. I was also extremely impressed by their dedication and hard work. This was an OUTSTANDING opportunity for us all, and I appreciate it a ton! Thanks for the lovely representation of Modern Dance.
DeleteYa same that dance was really imperssive and agreeing with Kalee here they were super dedicated and you could totally tell that they were 100% focused on the dance.
DeleteI agree with Emily that the dance 'Rising Low' was my favorite, and that many people can relate to that dance. Also you could tell that they were very focused.
DeleteThe Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company came to our school on Wednesday. They performed three dance routine. The names of the dances were Coming and Going, Rising Low, and Oh My. My favorite dance routine has to be Oh My. There were 5 girls and 1 boy. This dance routine was based off of snippets from books she read, she said. In this dance, three of the girls were wearing a LEMON color costumes and the other two girls and the boy were wearing a PEACH color. The costumes were baggy pants and a tight fitting shirt. They performed three parts of this dance. In the first part, the peach people were the first people on stage. They took many different pathways. They were very ENTHUSIASTIC while doing this. In the third part, the peach people and the lemon people were out at the same time. They all began dancing in UNISON. They did a lot of rolling across the floor of the stage. When they weren't rolling, they were marching in place, in a line on the stage. I enjoyed watching this dance, it was very intriguing.
ReplyDeleteon February 29th the Ellen sinopoli dance company came and it was a different kind of dance then i am use to. there were 5 girls and 1 guy and the guy was very flexible. in the first dance coming and going and i did not like the cloths they were wearing. i did not like the dance because it was not interesting.
ReplyDeletethis is my redo on the 29th of febuary the ellen sinopley dance companey came to our school and preformd 4 dances the cance im going to coment on comeing and going it was a diffrent kind of dance. they were all very flexabel and could move in many ways. the rithem always went with the dance if it was sad fast moving or exciteing it always mached. but the danceing was not evrey bodys thing. when they learn a new dance it can take up to 4 month

DeleteOn Wednesday we had the opportunity to enjoy a performance by the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company from the egg. My favorite dance was the second one. It was called Coming and Going. The dance started out with the dancers jogging in place in a corner of the stage. This was a unision movment, they were all doing the same movment. This dance kept my attention throughout the whole piece. Another thing i noticed about the dancers was that their costumes matched a little bit, but each one had something different about it. Another thing is that the dancers smiled throughout the whole dance, that was nice to see.

On Wednesday, we watched the Ellen Sinapoli Dance Company. The dancers performed 3 specific dances. The dances were Coming and Going, Rising Low and Oh My. My favorite dance was Rising Low because; I liked that dance because there were 4 chairs in the corner and it kind of showed FEARFULNESS of people in poverty or in times of trouble. I also liked it because the paths of the dance were used well by the dancer. The only piece I didn’t like was Oh My because, some parts of it didn’t make sense to me. Overall I thought the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company was OUTSTANDING and REMARKABLE. I will always remember when the Ellen Sinaopli Dance Company came to New Lebanon.
ReplyDeleteWatching the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company was THRILLING and it kept my attention. The way they twisted and swiveled captured my attention the whole time, leaving me without speech or breath. Before the first dance started I zoned out and settled down, figuring this would be as MIND-NUMBING as School Assemblies. As soon as they started the music I perked up a bit. 'Coming and Going' was the title of the first dance preformed. As soon as the first person stumbled upon the stage, my eyes were glued. I was amazed at the way the human body could stretch and move. My favorite part of this presentation was how the music seemed to flow through the dancer, leaving all viewers EXHILARATED and hungry for more. To capture the audience’s attention the performers used pathways, levels, unison and non-unison. The dancers also kept time and used a ton of space; the dancers were all over the stage! Many of my fellow classmates preferred ‘Oh My’ but I was astounded by the flowing feeling of ‘Rising Low’ the costumes all alike in some parts, in others they weren’t. The emotion conveyed through the dancers movements. The amount of work the dancers from the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company must have been tremendous, and then they came and preformed for us. I am so grateful for this inspiration; when the dancers finished they smiled, even though it was hard work doing what they did. It made me think that whatever I do with my life, I want to come out looking like they did, rewarded and satisfied with their job well done.
ReplyDeleteMy experience I had while watching the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company was RAVISHING. My favorite dance was Rising Low. The dance started with only one girl dancing around on the stage while the other 4 sat in their chairs looking at her dance. This dance was very ATTRACTIVE, so I never looked away from it. But all of the dancers had different dresses on and sat in different ways every time they turned to watch the soloist dance. Also, they never stopped smiling, even when their character in the dance was dangerous or sad.
ReplyDeleteI very much agree with Jamie Trombley that the dance was very attention capturing. It was so SWIFT and DELICATE.
DeleteOn Wednesday I watched three different dances. If I were to describe the dances using three different adjectives i would say they were weird, dramatic, and realistic. I chose weird, because it was a different kind of dance than what I was used to and they moved there bodies weired. I chose dramatic, because everything was big and full and they used a lot of space. The dancers used a lot of space, they moved around the stage and usually were never in just one place. The dancers used different levels by sometimes standing and sometimes laying down on the stage, and sometimes they were sitting in chairs in one of the dances. The costumes in the first dance we watched were very interesting. They were all similar but none of them were exactly the same.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Katarina because when all the dancers got up and their movements flowed together it was intriguing. Also, when the one dancer had a solo she made big EXAGGERATED movements that went along with the theme of the dance.
ReplyDeleteellen sinopoli dance company they did not use unison most of the time but were costantly using pathways. my favorite dance was oh my because the deep jazz singers voice went along with the movements they were doing to a point but sometimes they were quick and smooth movements when the singer had a deep calm rough voice.
ReplyDeleteWhen the dance company Ellen Sinopoli came and performed on Wednesday it seemed like they had been rehersing for a long time. The way that they knew their path and how they were all in unison was very impressive. THeir costumes also gave a burst of color and flavor to the dance aswell. They were very flowy and kind of fell down their bodies. Also their levels were always different. They were sometimes on the floor or jumping. I also felt that their timing was different during some things. Some people would move at different times but would still be doing the same movement. I had never seen anything like that before. I really enjoyed the performance od the Ellen Sinopoli dance company.
ReplyDeleteOn Wendseday the Ellen Sinopoli dance company came to our school and preformed three dances. The dances were coming & going, rising low, and oh my, in that order. My favorite was the last dance, oh my. This was my favorite dance because the others weren't as entertaining. Rising low was my least favorite because, there was a lot of dissonance, and it was confusing. I didn't like coming and going as much either because the dancers were always smiling and it was creepy. Even though I didn't like rising low as much i still liked how the one dancer traveled all over the stage.
ReplyDeleteThe Ellen Sinopoli dance company came and preformed for us on Wednesday. They preformed three dances for us, but each dance had many parts. For the last dance that they preformed, the dancers used different timing and not everything was in unison. Also the dancers used different levels in the dances. All throughout the dances, they used different pathways when they moved around the stage. The dances they preformed were very exhilarating and unique. All of the dances looked like they had taken alot of time to practice them, because they were all perfect and there timing was always right.

ReplyDeletei agree with paige the timing was alwas perfect
DeleteI do agree with everyone becuase i didn't see it.
DeleteThe Ellen Sanopli dance company came to our school and danced. I liked oh my the best. The dancer named Andre was frolicking across the stage as if he were in a meadow. The dancer named Andre seemed to be a very happy person. He was the only male in the group but gender doesn't matter. I think the young ladies that were in the group also did a fantastic job as-well.The young ladies in the group were running around in circles and sometimes Andre picked one of them up for part of their routine.
ReplyDeleteandre was cool
DeleteREDO:Wednesday February 29th the Ellen sinopoli dance company came to perform for the seventh and eighth grade. They performed three dances rising low, coming and going, and oh my. My favorite dance was rising low the dancers all wore the same dress but in different colors, they were very BORING. One girl was dancing slowly and every few minutes she would do a move quickly. The dance had a lot of PATHWAYS and slow movements that were very CAPTIVATING. The other dances were good but they didn’t stand out to me as much.
ReplyDeleteI did not see the Ellen Sonopolis dance proformance, but I watched videos of people dancing the next day, and it wasnt the proformance. The first dance took place on a stage, and the second dance the backround was in a subway station. They were Ok I liked the second dance better because I liked the music and the way they danced. The first one was kind of boring it was sort of a ballet dance thing and im not into that.
ReplyDeleteI recently watched the Ellen Sinopoli dance company as a part of Arts In Education. As a whole I enjoyed watching the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company. There were parts of the dances I did not like as much and there were other parts I really did like. A couple things I really liked about the dancing was they knew exactly what they were doing and did not miss a beat. Also I liked that there was many PATHWAYS but some how managed not to collide or bump into each other. what I didnt like about the dancing was that there was barely any UNISON, they were always running or dancing in different directions. In my opinion I liked Oh My! the best because of its high energy and smooth movements. These are the reasons i liked the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company and the reasons I didn't like them.
ReplyDeleteI got a chance to watch the Ellen Sinopoli dance company and i thought it was really cool and intresting. During the dances they were dancing in unison and then sometimes they were dancing in non-unison and doing their own dance moves. In the first dance "Coming and going" they were using a lot of space, they were all spaced out in the beginning. They were also dancing in unison. It was very NARROW. I noticed that they weren't TIRED during the dances. The one I liked the most was "Rise and Low" because it showed a lot od EMOTION through the dance and the song that went with it. The music was very slow and a sad song. I thought that the dances were IRREGULAR because I never saw mondern dance before so it wasn't too fimilar to me. At first I didn't know what it was and now I know.

ReplyDeleteArts in Ed. Blog Post 4-
ReplyDeleteFor arts in Ed today we did something much more DIVERSE than usual, we watched the Ellen Sinopoli dance company perform. i was FLABBERGASTED when they did such random dances, it was not at all what i had expected. Meg had been talking about the Ellen Sinopoli dance company ever since the program began, she talked very highly about the company but the did not seem to meet my PREDICTIONS. Many of my fellow classmates spoke of how the dancer Andre had an erection which in my opinion was GRUFF and AMISS for them to say. i overall enjoyed the performance and while it did not GRATIFY my OUTLOOK it was a good performance. my favorite out of all the dances was oh my because of the many different levels and pathways they used. I did as a whole enjoy the company and thought it was a nice treat for us to experience.
Today in arts in Ed we watched the Ellen Sinopoli preform three dance peices for us. The first peice told no real story, but still did have emotion. The second peice though told a depressing story. It used FACIAL EXPRESSIONS, and ENERGY to tell the story. The last dance peice Rising Low was even more depressing. It told a sad story of someone being so low they can not even rise up against it. Overall it was an interesting experience.
