Writing Focus: Argument
Prompt: Write a well-constructed paragraph about your opinion on one of the videos that we watched yesterday. The paragraph should address at least two dance concepts as they are used in the video. Each concept should be explained and described as a way to support your opinion about the piece. The text (video, in this case) must be referenced specifically.
Planning: Use your T-chart to record dance concept & description and your thinking. Use the Effective Argument Graphic Organizer (link in the resources below) to plan your paragraph.
Key Components of a Good Response:
- There is a topic sentence that restates the prompt.
- There is an awareness of audience (teacher, classmates, and community) and use proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- The paragraph is 6-8 sentences long, at least.
- The paragraph uses dance concepts correctly to reference specific textual evidence from the video to support the writer's argument.
- The paragraph uses interesting words that "bump up" their vocabulary and engage the reader. These words are IN ALL CAPS. You should include at least 2 "bumped-up" words.
- You received a "mini-thesaurus" with many different descriptive words. Reference that to find words to use to enhance your vocabulary.
- This is an online reference of descriptive words from Allan Hancock College.

Today, we were watching Videos on Youtube. The first dance we see is 'The Cold Song". I really liked that one point when they danced in UNISON. The next one, I really like, 'RIP Sodapop'. It is obvious there is all sorts of ENERGY and NEGATIVE SPACE. It also looked like they were having a fun time. Compared to the Cold Song, There only in it for the money and have no choice.
ReplyDeleteThe Cold Song was a very interesting dance. My favorite use of our concepts was how the dancers would start out together, then they would travel apart. The pathways they chose apart from eachother were very different, yet tied together. The time and energy of the dance were also very ENTHRALLING because they changed throughout the dance. In the beggining, it was very SOLEMN, but towards the end, it got more fast-paced and violent. The overall mood of the dance was that you were watching a DREADFUL and beautiful story unfolding.
ReplyDeleteI agree with emily because "The Cold Song" was also nice to watch, the dancers were really into their dancing to. It was a beautiful story unfloding. The dancers move together and use all the spce they are givin. It was truly an amazing dance also.
DeleteI agree with emily, the dance was very interesting
DeleteI agree with you when you stated that the overall feel of the dance was dreadful. The music and lyrics definitely helped portray that emotion. I, too, agree that the two dancers pathways definitely corresponded against the other, although at times I wished that they would have used more. An elegant story was definitely told!
DeleteI agree with Emily because i thought the dance was intresting and somewhat strange when the girl was asking the guy to freeze her.
DeleteI agree with Emily that the dancers used pathways and the time and energy of the dance changed throughout the piece. Sometimes the dancers would have slow, drawn out movements and at other times they danced around the stage with fast-paced energy. I also agree that the dance told a story, that went along with the lyrics of the song. I did enjoy watching this dance because of how emotional the dancers movements were.
DeleteI disagree with emily. Even know i liked the "COLD SONG" dance, i liked "R.I.P. Soda Pop" just a little bit better.I felt like the "Cold Song" had a sadder and slower energy, where as "R.I.P. Soda Pop" had a more lively and happy energy and that is why i liked it more.
DeleteI agree with Emily I thought it was interesting that the dancers started together and traveled apart. I also agree that it was very solemn and the pathways were very different.
DeleteThe video's we watched yesterday were very INTERESTING. I liked both "The Cold Song" and "R.I.P Soda Pop". But if i had to pick between the two, i would say i liked "R.I.P Soda Pop". I ESPECIALLY liked it because the dancers were more loose with their dances, They also new what they were doing. They were good with time, shape, space, and energy. Also it was fun to watch. And i think they did an amazing job.
ReplyDeleteI agree with carlie, i liked that the dancers were more loose with there dance moves.
DeleteI agree, they didn't really seem like they didn't have a choice. They chose to dance, some of the people in the circle never danced so they weren't forced to do this.
Deletein the the cold song there is dissonenc there was al ot of claashing between two things.there was clashing when the guy picks up the girl.he also toched when they held hands and ran around. Theme the theme is the girl dying beacause of the cold.It shows space and lots of that space is getting used.levels change when thje man picks up the girl.
ReplyDeleteThe video I watched was"RIP Soda Pop". IN this video i saw Levels, Energy, Space, Pathways, and Shapes. When the people were on the side of the cirlce and there was a person inside the circle, if they were bending down that is an example of different levels. The moves were usualy faster and sometimes slow, this would be energy. The dancers used an amount of space, in the beginning the used a lot of space, but in the middle of the video, they were just standing in a cirle and the dancer would just go insude the middle of the cirlce. When the one group walks over to the other group in the beginning thats a pathway the group is taking. The dancers moved there bodies in a bunch of different shapes.
ReplyDeleteI have the same words as you!!! :) I liked this video more then "The Cold Song". I liked the music in this video. I also liked all the energy.
DeleteI like R.I.P Sodapop was the one I like. I chose this one beacuse the use of their space was awsome and the music. The music in the other song was boring and lowd. The r.i.p soda pop was intreging to watch and the song in that song was awsome. But at the end Sammy thought that someone got shot.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this the other one was too slow i like fast danceing.
DeleteI agree with Richie that this music is more suited for most of our grade. Also I thought that this song was much more understandable than 'The Cold Song.' The song carried an upbeat tune throughout the video.
DeleteI agree with you rich rip soda pop was verry good i like fast dancing.
DeleteI agree with Riche, I liked the way they moved their feet and arms and I also liked the music too.
DeleteI agree with Rich, I liked the way they moved their arms and legs and I liked the music too. It was and very intresting
DeleteI agree The music in the "cold song" was really slow and boring .
DeleteToday we watched 2 dance videos.I am going be be argueing the second one called the cold song. The cold song in my opinon was quite frightening and rather creepy. There was lots of unison and empty space in that dance. In the dance a man who represents the winter freezing a woman to death.(rather odd)I found this dance to be interesting just because it was so creepy and weird
ReplyDeletei second that motion it was VERY odd.
DeleteI also agree this video was rather odd. considering the fact that there were people dying and the dance was also very slow
DeleteThe dance video that i liked the most was "RIP sodapop". There were many pathways that they took, levels, shapes, non unison moves, and timeing in this video. I think one of the things that i liked most about this video was the music they had paired up with it. It was sort of a type of hip-hop. All the dancers in this video took many differnt pathways. For example when they were all going to the spot where they danced, they all took a diffrent pathway, or route to the spot. But other then that, mostly they stayed in a tight circle and did many non unison moves. The timeing of this dance was very fast. Over all i found this dance very exhilirating, unique, and intresting, it kept my attention.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the R.I.P Sodapop dance. The energy of the dance was very EXHILARATING, happy. The dancers didn't take up much of the space they had. They all formed a circle and didn't travel in the street much after they started dancing. Majority of the dancers danced with their hands. Some of the shapes they made were very FASCINATING. None of the dancers danced in unison beacuse they all danced on their own.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ally. I also noticed that the dance had a lot of positive energy. I really liked it.
Deletewhen we watched the videos the one I liked the best was R.I.P. Soda Pop. I liked this video the best because the SHAPES were very interesting and it was more MODERN than the Cold Dance. For example they were out on the streets and they weren't wearing costumes. They had alot of dfferent LEVELS but not as much as the cold dance. In the beginning of R.I.P. Soda Pop there were alot of different PATHWAYS that they took before they met in the middle, therefore there would be alot of NEGATIVE SPACE. Another reason why this dance was better than the Cold Dance was because the TIMING was much faster and kept my attention. This is why I liked the video R.I.P. soda pop the best.
ReplyDeleteI was thoroughly INTRIGUED by the first dance Ms. Obrien shared with us in class, this dance was called 'The Cold Song.' This dance was OVERWHELMINGLY- BREATHTAKING and had a meaningful song paired with it. I thought the theme was well thought out and was conveyed throughout the dance. In my opinion the dancers and music were paced well together; always in time. the dancers in the video 'The Cold Song' dance in both unison and non-unison, when they did dance in unison they kept in time with eachother, using similar pathways. When the dancers took different pathways they ASSUMED different positions in space. The levels they used were always strikingly similar or tremendously different, usually the latter. This dance portrays the song that played throughout the video.
ReplyDeleteI really like how you described the dancers as well paced. It seemed effortless how they interacted. The rhythm of the movements rose and fell throughout the song and yet seemed to all fit together.
DeleteI really enjoyed watching the second dance, "50,000 Watts of Funking." It was fast-paced and REMARKABLE, in the way all the dancers put a TREMENDOUS amount of energy into their moves. The dancers used shape to spice up their dance by all having diverse movements. They danced in time with the music, but the dancers themselves never danced in time with eachother, so they used non-unison. In addition they used pathways in the beginning of the dance when they all entered onto the street. Another dance concept they used was levels. By using levels they were able to move around more, and make the dance more attetion-grabbing. I really loved watching this dance, because of the amount of effort and energy the dancers put into their movements.
ReplyDeleteI will be arguing the two videos, "The Cold Song" and "R.I.P. Sodapop." The video I liked the most was, "R.I.P. Sodapop." This dance was very ATTRACTING and PROVOKING. This was attractive because the music went along with the dance and so the timing was fast. This made me want to watch this video because it kept my interest. Also, the energy went from slow to fast back to slow. This happened because they were all walking, then they started to dance then they got into a group and started thanking each other. Overall, "R.I.P Sodapop" attracted my attention the most.
ReplyDeleteSame here, I noticed how the dancers danced more quickly as the music sped up. I also liked R.I.P Sodapop better than the Cold Song.
DeleteI agree with Jamie becuase their moves went along with the music and I liked that the most. It also showed their character.
DeleteOne of the dances I saw, R.I.P. Sodapop, interested me because of the pathways in it. From the begining of the dance to the end, all the dancers entered from different directions, making their way to an DESOLATE parking lot. This was where the dancers took turns to dance. They made different shapes with their bodies, slowly at first and then SPEEDED their movements until the main dancer was still dancing but the ones who were watching were dancing to the music as well. The dancers did not dance in unison at any point of this dance, when they did similiar movements they each added their own twist to it. They also all made different shapes as they danced. One of the female dancers did a really unique dance which did not REFLECT those of the other dancers at all.
ReplyDeleteIm going to write my responce about a video called RIP Soda Pop. One dance consept that came out at me in this video is their pathway. In the beginning of the video the PERFORMERS use as much pathway they can use, but when they come together they dont use that much pathway. Another concept that I saw was levels. They use so much levels, they LEAP up they crouch close to the ground and they move to the left and right.
ReplyDeleteToday, we watched two videos they are the “cold song” and “R.I.P sodapop”. The one I like the most is the R.I.P sodapop because the background is in the street and the dance went with the music as really fast. The timing of the video was that it was slow but the music was fast. The levels were the person that was moving his hand back and forth. The theme of this video is on the street.
ReplyDeleteIn class we watched two videos the cold song and RIP soda pop. I chose to write about RIP soda pop because it was very cool. This video has many dance concepts. One of the dance concepts was shape. There was alot of shape in this video when the one guy was moving his hands. There was also alot of movement when everyone was dancing in the circle.Another dance concept was space. There was alot of space in the center of the circle.
ReplyDeleteThe "Cold Song" was definitely a very CAPTIVATING dance. Many dance terms were expressed in this routine. Different levels were definitely a key concept, especially in the beginning, when the male dancer was standing tall, with the female on the ground. I feel that this PORTRAYED his power over the girl. I enjoyed how this went along with the music, and made this part of the performance more easier to understand. I also appreciated how very little amounts of unison were used, helping exhibit the vast amount of dissonance. The dancers almost never used the same movements at the same times, which really showed how their movements clashed. I feel that she was begging for something, most likely to be frozen, like expressed in the song lyrics. There was a lot of negative space, which is where the dancers are not. I appreciate how the dancers were very close together, but sometimes wished that they would use more of the stage. All in all, I enjoyed this dance, and felt that it communicated many crucial approaches that were neccessary to properly tell a VIVID story.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jade when she says that the Cold Song was very captivating because the ballet is so EXOTIC that it makes you want to watch every move.
DeleteThe video I liked was RIP Soda Pop. The dance was very INTRIGING and CAPTIVATING in the way the dancers made interesting shapes with their bodys. The energy i felt from watching the video was a very high energy level with the way they moved as well as the way the people who weren't even dancing moved. The video made me think that ssomeone died what the title and the movement how the dancers kissed their hands and looked up that kind of gave me an idea. The space they used was very samll but they made the best of the little dance room they had as the people watching were in a circle around them. This dance caught my attention and msde me feel that there was a message we were supposed to get between the music and the dancers.
ReplyDeleteI agree with u saying the R.I.P Sodapop was intriging and captivating!!
DeleteA video i watched was "RIP Soda Pop". In this video there were different levels, energy, time, space, and pathways. When they were in the circle and one persona at a time would go out and do their own dance move, i felt a lot of energy. I saw a lot of energy because the people would be supporting the person who was dancing in the middle of the group circle. I also saw a lot of different levels. Some poeple would be standing around in the circle, and they would be up high, but then sometimes people would get low when they went in the group circle. I also think that the time was really good in this video. The dancers would make their dances go along with the music. For example, if the music was kind of slow, then the dancers would dance slowly. I also saw space in the video. When people were in the group circle, there was space in the middle of it, and the dancers would use up all of that space to do their dance moves. There was also pathways in this video. Expecially when they were walking to their group of friends, they were walking in their pathway. Each group of dancers came from different pathways.
ReplyDeleteYesterday I watched This dance that was called "The Cold Song". I liked the first one because it didn't really have too much energy like in the second one. There was different levels in this dance because the girl is being picked up and then she is back on the ground. At the beginning of the video they were spaced out a little bit but throughout the dance then they got closer. At one point of the dance they were doing unison but then they did different moves. The timing of the dance was slow at first but then it kinda sped up a little. The pathways were like they started off going the same way but then they began to move to different places. What I thought was strange was that the girl was asking the guy to freeze her. That was the only thing i thought was strange during the dance.

ReplyDeleteI disliked "The Cold Song" becuase it was creepy.
DeleteYesterday I watched R.I.P. Sodapop. I liked the second video becuase it had a lot of emotions and energy and the first video had no emotion or energy. There were different levels when a guy in a white sweatshirt bent back on his shins and then flew back up onto his feet. There was also shapes where one of the first two guys wearing hats makes box-like shapes with his hands. At the begining of the video it started off sad and depressing then it went to dubstep. There where four pathways that the four peolple met up at and started dancing to the music. The dubstep music went from fast to slower than to faster agian.
ReplyDeletei like the RIP soda pop video more than the cold song one because it was more of the dancing i like one of the people made interesting shapes with his hands in the shape of squares and rectangles. i also liked the energy in it because everyone was happy and having a good time and showing off. i didnt like the cold sing video because there was no unison and i did not like the music
ReplyDeleteToday and yesterday we watched two different dances with two different genres. The first video we watched was called Cold Song, a CONTEMPORARY ballet routine. The dancers used space as an ALLY, as they swiftly moved across the stage. One detail that was very important to this dance was the theme or story of the dance. The theme was a girl asking the winter to freeze her. The other video we watched was called R.I.P Sodapop. This dance was a hip-hop routine. This dance used a lot of shape, in the dancer’s arms. It also used pathways in the beginning when the car and the position of everyone walking up into a group. My favorite dance out of these two was the R.I.P Sodapop because the energy of the dance was fun and kinda robotic and the music was just plain awesome.
ReplyDeleteThe video I liked best was "RIP Soda Pop". I liked it because of its use of time. It was used throughout the entire video and it created a more intense feeling in the video. Everyone's dance wasn't necessarily the same length, but they all looked very INTRIGUING. Another thing I liked was the use of negative space, between the dancers and the audience. It had absolutely no affect my opinion, whatsoever. I just so happened to notice it. The main thing I like was their energy. They were very energetic and it created dissonance between the title and the music/movements. All in all, "RIP Soda Pop" was a very good video and I would never be able to move the ways they do. They make very FASCINATING movements in the video.
ReplyDeleteI liked the video ”RIP Soda Pop” because I liked the different SHAPES the dancers made with their bodies.I liked how they danced in NON-UNISON.When the dancers used NON-UNISON one would be walking out of the circle while one was going into it, but other then that no one was really dancing at the same time. This affected my opinion because it made the dancing more interesting.I also liked the lively ENERGY when they danced. The energy in the dance was really lively and happy but the video’s meaning was kind of sad because it was a tribute to a friend of the dancer’s that passed away. The energy of this piece affected my opinion because it was really happy and had lots of joy in it but their was also a deeper meaning.Overall, the video “R.I.P. Soda Pop“ was very interesting and spontaneous and that is why i enjoyed it.
ReplyDeleteThe video I watched was called "R.I.P soda Pop this video was full of energy with captivating timing. When they were all gathered around in a circle you could feel a lot of energy from all the different dancers and the way they each danced with there own styles among one another. The dancers had great timing when they switch off from dancer to dancer which went great with the music.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree i felt the energy was way higher then in the Cold Song
DeleteI really liked the video "R.I.P. Soda Pop." I thought the movements that the dancers were able to create were very INTRIGUING. The dancers used many different LEVELS throughout the video. One of the presenters was able to bend their entire back down to the ground. Also, while people entered the middle of their dance circle, others jumped around or knelt to the ground. I also thought that the SHAPES their bodies made were very fascinating. A lot of the presenters stepped into the middle of their dance circle and proceeded to make strange movements with their arms. I thought it was INCREDIBLE how these people could create so many different levels and shapes. Overall, "R.I.P. Soda Pop" was a very exciting video.
ReplyDeletei liked the video R.I.P. soda pop.I think the dancers made a lot of unique SHAPES for example one guy made box like hand movements and then hoped on one knee to the other. In the beginning of the dance there was a lot of PATHWAYS when they were all coming together but at the end they did not.Towards the end of the video the dancers has less SPACE and did more hand movements one guy puts his elbow on his other forearm and then slides it into his hand and controls his arm with his hand.Overall i this video was very intriguing.

ReplyDeletethe video i liked was the rip soda pop verry modern

ReplyDeletei liked the video RIP Sodapop better. The dancers used their bodies to create alot of different SHAPES. There was also a lot of negative space and PATHWAYS around the city. It had a more modern feel and wasn't restricted to a stage. instead it took place on the streets in an urban city area.
